5 out of 5 stars Wasn't much of a reader...   July 30, 2010
Michael Studebaker (Kennewick, WA.)
I'm not much of a reader, until I got my Kidle. I have read more in the last month with my Kindle than I have in the last year. Easy to use, easy to read. The best part is you can read whatever you want and no one knows what you're reading.

1 out of 5 stars The background screen is too dark   July 30, 2010

I'm a first time kindle user and I believe that this would have been a great product, except for the fact that the background screen is DARK GRAY.

I'm not familiar with their technology, but it seems that they could have easily projected the "e-ink" against a much lighter background. Just compare the background to the color of the kindle itself. Better yet, hold up any random book you find, open it up and compare it to the kindle screen; the difference is apalling. There is no reason for the page background to be that dark.

I would LIKE to think that Amazon did not do this purposefully so that they could easily "improve the contrast by 50%" in future generations simply by providing a brighter background. I am not familiar with the tech for this device, so perhaps this is as bright as their tech would allow. I am surprised that, out of all the reviews I've read about the Kindle, this issue was rarely brought up, if at all. Anyway, Target (where i bought it) will not allow any returns, and neither will Amazon. For future reference, do not buy any kindles thru target!

I feel Like I was ripped off...First let me say I do enjoy my Kindle..My son wanted to buy me one for my birthday, he saved his money since he is a student.. I have had this kindle for about a month...Thought it was a good deal now I see that they have a newer model for $139.00, & it has more storage ...I'm sure that you guys was aware that a newer version was coming along...Now I see that the options for the newer version is in Graphite color, more storage & the buttons look great for less dollars..Wow what a joke!!! Amazon is starting to be like everybody else there should be some way that you could upgrade...I'm just a little disappointed in Amazon...I guess you guys have capitalize just like the other guys!!!

4 out of 5 stars If I'd only known... I'd have waited for the 3rd generation...   July 30, 2010

Let me first say that the Kindle is an amazing device! I love it !!

Now with that said... I wish I'd known about the 3rd generation device. I bought my Kindle at the beginning of July. I like everything about the device except that it doesn't have a WI-FI option... And of course, the 3rd generation device has WI-FI. Oh well! While I live in a big city, the neighborhood I live in has really poor cell phone coverage so I end up downloading books to my PC and then load them on my Kindle via the USB cable.

From a user point of view the Kindle is light, compact and the contrast of the screen is great. It's very much like reading print on a piece of paper. I took it with me on a recent trip to Europe so I'd have enough reading material on the 10 hour flight. It's the perfect way to bring reading material with you when you travel. I brought 9 books and 1 magazine and the all fit in the space of a single hardback book. Awesome! The Kindle worked great even in the low light conditions on an airplane at night with only a small overhead light. The battery life is great. I used it daily for 7 days on the Europe trip and the battery still showed 3/4 charged when I got back.

I've read some reviews that say that you read more slowly on this kind of device, but I haven't experience that at all. I read 3 books during my Europe trip and found the experience to be not much different than reading a paper book. I find the form factor of the device very nice... Especially that you can read while eating and not have to juggle to keep the book open. Another really nice feature of the device for me.

If you read a lot you will really enjoy using this device. It works exactly as advertised.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed & Duped   July 30, 2010

I have not yet had a chance to down load any new books on my Kindle since I was finishing up a few unread books I had bought. One thing I have noticed though is that for some reason the battery runs down within a day or two even with the Kindle powered down. This is very disappointing since I believe it was advertised as lasting over a week on a full charge.
Now for the Duped part of my review. You heavily advertised the reduced price for the Kindle around the time I purchased my Kindle. Today I learn the the 3RD generation Kindle was just released at the same price I bought mine for a month ago. This leads me to believe the advertising blitz was a plan to reduce your inventory of the old Kindles before the release of the new one. I would like to know I can send back my old (actually brand new) Kindle for a new 3rd generation Kindle. If you really care about my review you will respond to my concerns. Thank you.
